STATE OF KUWAIT |

Kuwait, was referred to by the name Grane in the early seventeenth century. The name is diminutive of the Arabic words Qarn and Kout. Qarn is a high hill and Kout is a fortress. Kuwaiti gainined full independence on 1961. Kuwait lies at the northeast corner of the Arabian Gulf as it shares its east border with it. To the south and southwest it shares border with the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and to the north & west it shares border with the Republic of Iraq. The total area of the State of Kuwait is 17,818 square Kilometers (6,969 square miles). The weather of the country is characterized by long, hot and dry summers, short warm and sometimes rainy winters. Dust storms almost always occur with a rise in humidity during summer. There are nine islands off the coast of Kuwait: Failaka, Bubiyan, Miskan,Warba, Auhha, Umm Al-Maradim, Umm Al-Naml, Kubbar and Qaruh.

Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research (KISR) is an independent public institution in
the State of Kuwait. The main objectives of the institute are to carry out applied
scientific research that helps the advancement of national industry and to undertake
studies relating to the preservation of the environment, resources of natural wealth
and their discovery, sources of water and energy, methods of agricultural exploitation
and promotion of water wealth. The law entrusted the Institute with undertaking
research and scientific and technological consultations for both governmental and
private institutions in Kuwait, The Gulf region and the Arab World.
